Welcome to Second Class 23/24
Seachtain na Gaeilge
The boys and girls had great fun celebrating all things Irish for Seachtain na Gaeilge. The children engaged in a huge amount of activities over the two weeks from poster competitions, seanfhocail bunting, learning a collective whole school dance- An Dreolín, completing a Trath na gCeist, Bióngo as well as a QR Treasure hunt!
The children tried their best to speak as much Irish as they could over the space of the two weeks and even made their own podcast As Ghaeilge!
Obair Iontach Rang a dó- Tá muid iontach brodúil asti!

First Penance
The boys and girls made their First Penance on Tuesday the 12th of March in the local St. Joseph's Church, Ballyshannon.
The boys and girls underwent huge preparation for the event learning songs, completing some lovely art work, learning prayers and studying the story of Zacchaeus.
The First Penance is a huge milestone in the children's faith formation and gives us an opportunity to reflect on the six steps of reconciliation.
Well done to all the boys and girls from Rang a Dó!!!

Maths- Active Learning
We are very good at Math in Rang a Dó! We have been looking not only at the math in our books but also in a real life context. We have been measuring items in the classroom, we went on a shape hunt, we designed our own word problems (using the RUCSAC approach) and we loved designing our own number sums for Place Value.
The boys and girls have worked very hard at math this term with a particular focus on number as a strand.
We may have a few Mathematicians in this class group in years to come!!!

Christmas 'Grinch' Art
The Children worked hard on drawing and colouring their cartoon versions of the Grinch. They enjoyed practicing their attention-to-detail skills and colouring him appropriately.
The boys and girls loved watching the movie during their wet breaks and hope that the Grinch doesn't steal their toys this Christmas!!!
Christmas Jumper Art
The children in second class practiced their comprehension strategy of prediction this term and tried to predict the initial jumper which Patrick Kielty would wear whilst hosting his first ever Toy Show. The children looked at jumpers from the past Toy shows and used them as a basis to build their prediction on. The children took different themes/ colours typically associated with Christmas and popular affairs into consideration when coming up with their design!
Pointillism Art
Using a cotton bud the children practiced pointillism art. They designed snow people to go with the classroom theme of 'An Nollag'. The boys and girls loved picking and designing their own snow people and were able to add different features to them to be unique, just like us!!!
Don't they look great?

Math Trail
Math Trail- The children used both their skills of estimation and measuring to find answers to their questions. Children were tasked to work together as part of a team and count/ informally measure different areas. The boys and girls had to use their answers to furthermore solve number equations. We had loads of fun doing our math hunt!
China- SESE
Mad Mapping- As our country of choice, the boys and girls have started looking at China as a country. The children had to work together in pairs and use positional language to instruct their partner on the shape of the country! The children developed their sense of Space skills by engaging in this activity. The boys and girls are looking forward to learning more about China in the coming weeks and comparing it to Ireland!
Gaeilge- An Haca
Bhí an-spraoi againn ag foghlaim an Haca as Gaeilge. Rinne muid an damhsa seo chun iarrachatí an fhoireann Éireann sa chorn domhanda rugbaí a cheilirúdh. Tá muid bródúil asat, Éireann.
Maths Week
The Boys and Girls had great fun celebrating all things Math in Math's Week. The children played addition/ subtraction snakes and ladders, competed in the Mathematics world cup and were able to order and sequence a deck of cards form smallest to largest.
The children used their mathematics skills in P.E. and completed a deck of cards relay where they had to work together as part of a team to collect all the cards in their allocated suit and order them in the quickest time.
The video shows the children using non-verbal forms of communication to order themselves from smallest to tallest.

People in STEM
We looked at the job of people in STEM and the important decisions which they have to make on a daily basis. The class looked at the job of an engineer specifically and how their decisions impact our lives. We were able to make connections to local developments which were designed by engineers- the Ballyshannon Bridge and what we would do without it.
The children were then tasked to work together as a group and using minimal equipment (Scissors, one sheet of paper and a glue stick) to make the longest and most durable paper chain which they could possibly make.
The children loved explaining their though processes and enjoyed showing them off to their classmates.
