5th and 6th Class 2024/2025
Summer Newsletter
As our final term comes to an end, the weeks have really flew by and the pupils worked really hard and enjoyed going away on many trips! We had great fun on our school tour at Share Village in Lisnaskea. We went kayaking and canoeing which was a great experience. After working on our Ukulele skills since the start of the year, 5th and 6th classes went to An Grianán Theatre and performed a song on stage in front of other schools. We have had visitors who have done tag rugby and handball classes for the children which were great fun!
As we say goodbye to our current 6th class pupils, they had their Confirmation in Bundoran towards the end of May. Everyone worked very hard during their rehearsals and the day was a great success. They also resumed the schools "Siopa Na Scoile" which has been a great way of working on their handling money skills as well as calculating cost prices and profits. The money raised from the Siopa went towards two 6th class trips, the first to Xtreme Jump in Derry and bowling in Bundoran. The class also went on a fantastic cycling trip to Creevy Pier when the weather was nice. Everyone in the school would like to wish them the very best as they start their new journey in Secondary School.
In our final term we have read the novel "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" and created booklets highlighting key moments in the story. We worked in groups to create fantastic projects on different Irish buildings and everyone made a great effort in Maths over the term as we have learned about fractions, decimals and percentages. In Irish we have learned loads of different vocabulary about Caitheamh Aimsire and Éadaí. The pupils drew their own clothes and gave them labels to add to a display in the classroom, they turned out really colourful!

Easter Newsletter
5th and 6th class have had a very busy term and it has absolutely flown by! Our class competed in the VEX Robotics regional competitions in Letterkenny and in Sligo. The team managed to qualify for the National Championships in Cork which was an amazing achievement in only our first year competing in the competition. We had pupils working on several tasks including building the robot, building our game arena, coding the robot and managing our schedule on competition days. We even had a group of students who designed the t-shirts we wore at the events. The event was a great success and helped students develop in many STEM skills.
In Maths we have worked on our division, data, time and area skills and in Gaeilge we have been learning all about Bia and ag Siopadóireacht.
In Science we have been learning all about the Lungs and the class even made great Art pieces modelling the Respiratory System.
The class have been very busy in recent weeks. On Mondays the class are learning French, on Tuesday we have GAA skills lessons and on Wednesdays the class play Ukelele. In March 5th and 6th also completed a Cycle Skills workshop where everyone learned how to cycle safely in public. We have just started our Swimming lessons too, which will run until after the Easter Break.
I hope everyone has a wonderful break and look forward to seeing everyone back and ready to go for our last term!

Christmas Newsletter
The weeks have flown in and we are already close to Christmas! 5th and 6th class have been very busy working on so many different activities and subjects. We are so proud of our debating team who won their first round match in the Concern Primary Debates and they were also very close to winning their second round. The whole class have been making a huge effort with our VEX robotics activities, which has seen the children build, program and drive a robot, as well as building a large game arena for the robot to play games on.
We conducted great Science experiments, such as making catapults, lava lamps and exploring how salt water makes objects float at sea. 5th and 6th class have also been working very hard on their Math's and writing skills in English, as well as working on learning about homes and school as Gaeilge.
In the run up to the Christmas holidays we have been working very hard on our Christmas play "Home Alone". It was a huge team effort which involved the children learning many lines, creating props for the set and focusing on both voice projection and moving off and on set.
I hope that everyone has a fantastic Christmas holidays and we will be looking forward to seeing everyone back in January!

The pupils have been working hard building a robot and game arena for a competition after Christmas. They will be taking part in a game called "Rapid Relay" against other schools in the regional finals in Letterkenny and Sligo.
Science Experiments
Here are a few of the Science experiments we conducted in November. They are lava lamp making, constructing catapults and investigating why objects float in salt water.
Halloween Newsletter
It's hard to believe that we are already at Halloween. We've had a very busy term in 5th and 6th class, going on fun trips and creating all sorts of projects in different subjects. For our last day before the break we all worked very hard together to create the annual "Horror Hall" for the younger classes to go through! While 6th class are preparing for life beyond primary school we have went to Coláiste Cholmcille for a sports day and they recently visited the school for its open day.
We've kept the corridor outside our room very colourful with all the wonderful art over the last few weeks and visited our Junior and Senior Infants rooms playing fun maths games with them as part of Maths Week. 5th and 6th also have worked extremely hard on a range of projects including making bridges using spaghetti, creating parachutes and creating Powerpoints about Museums and the African country Mali.
We have also worked hard on our communication skills through debating. Everyone took part in researching for different debate motions and argued their points with one another in a very mature and respectable way. After Halloween we are taking part in the Concern Primary Debates competition and we are very proud of the research that our class is conducting for it.
We hope everyone has a fantastic Halloween break and we look forward to welcoming you all back in November!

Bridge Making in Science!
In Science we learned about how different animals make simple objects such as homes and bridges out of items they can easily find in nature. We put a spin on this by trying to make a bridge out of a cheap and easy resource found in most homes - spaghetti! Here are a selection of our wonderful bridges!
Debating Practice!
5th and 6th class have been practicing the skill of debating different motions. Here are some of the teams that took part in some debates in front of the other senior classes.
Wainfest 2024
In early October we went to the Ballyshannon Library for a talk on how movie scripts are made. We also went on a trip to the Abbey Theatre to watch an animated film called Kensuke's Kingdom!
Erasmus Sports Day in Coláiste Cholmcille
We had a fun 2 days competing with other schools playing different sports such as hockey, bowls, volleyball and Gaelic football!
Making Parachutes in Science
We made our own parachutes when learning about the force of Gravity in Science. The aim was to protect the egg that we put in the parachute's cup!
