Welcome to 5th and 6th Class!
Christmas Newsletter
It’s hard to believe that we are at Christmas already! It has been a very busy few weeks in 5th and 6th class with lots of work and fun being had! We started to practice debating in preparation for the Concern Primary Debates Competition coming up in the new year. Everyone worked so hard on their research and their public speaking skills!
In SESE we learned all about the Titanic and created amazing projects and artwork about the ship. The pupils presented their creations to the rest of the class and told us some very interesting facts!
Over the past few weeks, we have been practicing our Christmas play “The Grinch”. There were lots of lines and songs to be learned and we are very proud of the work everyone has put in. Each student also put in a great effort to make the different artwork on display on the set.
In Maths we have been working very hard on different topics such as Fractions, Division, Multiplication and Shapes. Over the next few weeks, we have started two new novels in class – “Holes” by Louis Sachar and “Wonder” by RJ Palacio. Pupils have been doing both reading and written activities, focusing on different aspects such as predicting skills, vocabulary work and exploring character feelings.
Finally, 5th and 6th have been preparing for the VEX Robotics regional championships after Christmas. Pupils have been working towards building a robot to play a game called “Mix and Match” with the aim to stack as many pins on top of each other as possible. Other work pupils have completed for the competition are coding, artwork and creating their engineering logbook. We wish everyone a very happy Christmas and look forward to seeing everyone back in the New Year!

Halloween Newsletter
This term has already been a busy one for our 5th and 6th class students! We have been settling in well and have worked really well in areas such as Multiplication in Maths, Mé Féin in Gaeilge and Narrative Writing in English. We have been doing lots of drama, practicing our acting and improvisation skills. We also have created lovely art pieces every Thursday!
Our 5th and 6th Class represented our school very well in the recent Cross Country competition. We also have been working on our robot for the new VEX robotics season. This year we hope to improve on our first year of competing by giving a respectable account of ourselves in the regional finals and hopefully making the National Championship again this year!
Along with 4th and 5th class, we organised a chess competition where a massive 45 pupils entered! There were some fantastic games on show and it was great to see all the pupils who put in the practice before their matches. We held the final on the last Monday of term, where both classes watched the action unfold being streamed on our Interactive Whiteboard. For Maths week, we hosted some games for Junior and Senior Infants and we were glad they enjoyed them!
Finally, we have been practicing our Debating skills in the lead up to the Concern Primary Debates competition which will be happening in a few weeks. Pupils debated for and against the motion that "Under 16's should be banned from social media". There was some fantastic research done and it was great to hear everyone's points.
