Green Schools Program

Travel Theme...

Well done to everyone who made such a super effort in February for our 'Love Our Planet' walk/scoot/walk 'n stride campaign. You all did a super job and we hope to continue this in the summer term. Our Green Schools have also been working hard to come up with our slogan and we also did a 'walkability' survey in which we identified the safe routes to school and what needs to be updated to make these routes even safer for all. Well done Green Schools on another busy term and we look forward to the cycle bus starting again after Easter. 

Our Next Challenge...!

Green Schools are starting our next theme which is travel. We have a busy two years ahead working towards our flag. The aim is to encourage as many children to walk, cycle or scoot to school and to explore sustainable travel. We are off to a great start with our Cycle Bus initaitive and well done to all the boys and girls who have joined our cycle bus over the last few weeks!

We did it!

A big well done to our Green School Committees over the last two years who have worked hard to monitor our water usage and ways in which we can save water. Their hard work paid off and we were awarded our second Green Schools flag. As a big thank-you and a well done treat, we got ourselves an ice-cream! Thanks to everyone who helped out and well done to all!

"Water Water Everywhere..." 

Our Green Schools committee have been very busy monitoring our water usage at school, making sure everyone is turning off the taps after washing their hands so we're not wasting water. We had a visit from the Green Schools Team to check in on all the great work we had been doing and carried out a really fun experiment about brushing our teeth. All the classes also learned all about 'The Water Cycle' and we can't wait to do another 'Big Spring Clean' in the summer term. Well done Green Schools Committee! 

Green Schools 23/24

Our Green School theme for this year is Water. We made a fantastic start on this theme last year and we continue to work on the theme of litter and waste.
Mr Sweeny's class took part in our first 'litter pick' of the year and made a huge difference to the area around our school. Thank you to fifth and sixth class!
Our cycle bus is up and running and although the weather has not been in our favour this term, it was fantastic to see such a huge turn out and have so many parents/gardians supporting the children.
We continue to monitor our classroom and school bins. We continue to reduce and reuse whenever possible. 
The Green Schools team would like to thank all those who donated a costume or collected a costume from our Halloween drive. Remember it can be lots of fun to make your own from recycled materials at home too.

​We are participating in the Green Schools Programme.  We are currently working on the Litter & Waste Flag.  Our aim is to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.  We have also participated in community and beach clean-up projects. Our Christmas Card project will see this year’s cards recycled for use in art projects.  Webinars on Pollution, waste and awareness have taken place and our Parents’ Association regularly organize clothes collections.

     GREEN SCHOOLS
Work has continued this term on our themes of ‘ Litter and Waste’ and ‘ Water’.
Following on from our experiment on flushable materials the Green school committee distributed posters detailing their findings to all the classes. The Committee is happy to report a huge rise in awareness of flushables and a huge reduction in the amount of blue tissue in toilets. Well done everyone!
Our ‘Big Spring Clean’ was a great success. Mr Sweeny’s class decided to focus on the area around the Mall park and managed to collect three large bags of rubbish. It wasn’t all hard work however. There was time for a well earned picnic before a trip to the pool and back to school.
Thank you to everyone involved in our school Cycle Bus. It is great to see so many bikes every Wednesday morning!
The ‘In My Shoes’ campaign was a huge success and we hope to make it an annual event. Thank you for donating your runners and sports shoes to a very good cause. Over 70 pairs of shoes were collected for distribution to children in African townships.
As our theme this year is Water we organised a coffee morning in aid of the RNLI and our Junior infant class enjoyed a wonderful trip to Bundoran RNLI station to learn all about water safety and the important work of the RNLI volunteers. Many thanks to Jim and Fionn for your help.
We are so lucky to live in an area surrounded by water. We continue to develop our understanding of the importance of respecting and caring for our rivers, lakes and oceans.

Cycle Bus

Our pupils participate in our Cycle bus every Wednesday morning, weather permitting.  We meet in the Mall Park and cycle to school.  We are so lucky to have the help of Ballyshannon Gardaí and even other schools in the area have hopped onto our cycle bus!
